Feathered Serpent Press is an independent Baltimore publisher of speculative, dystopian, and dark literary fiction, genre-informed, not genre-bound. We publish Chicanismo: Literary Punk Journal and are the press behind Read & Riot, Baltimore's independent bookstore and literary center, opening July 2026.
If the work is urgent and the voice is distinct, we want to read it.
OUR MISSION:
Feathered Serpent Press is an independent literary publisher founded and operated in Baltimore, Maryland. We exist to publish the work that corporate gatekeepers overlook, fiction by writers from communities that have been historically underrepresented in American publishing.
Our editorial focus is speculative fiction, dystopian fiction, science fiction, and dark literary fiction, but we welcome strong work across all genres. What draws us to a manuscript isn't category, it's the quality of the thinking and the distinctiveness of the voice. Baltimore is home to an extraordinary range of writers and storytellers, and it is our primary responsibility to find them, develop their work, and bring it to readers.
Every title receives direct editorial involvement from the ground up, from manuscript development through cover design, production, and distribution. We collaborate with local Baltimore artists and creative professionals to ensure each book is made with the same care and craft that went into writing it.
We publish Chicanismo: Literary Punk Journal, a bi-monthly print and digital literary magazine that combines Chicano identity, punk ethos, and literary craft. Chicanismo publishes poetry, short fiction, flash fiction, creative nonfiction, and visual art from voices the mainstream literary world consistently overlooks. Submissions are open on a rolling basis.
Read & Riot, our independent bookstore and community literary center, opens in Baltimore in July 2026. It is the physical home of the press, a place to buy books, attend workshops, participate in open mics, and work alongside other writers and readers. Membership tiers start at $15 a month and are designed to be accessible to anyone serious about the literary life.
We do not charge authors for any part of the publishing process. Our commitment is to the work and to the writers who create it.
